Geocache Description:

An interesting historic place close by Monemvasia. Check out the remainings of this large city more ancient than Monemvasia itself.

A few minutes north of Monemvasia you can find the remainings of the antique city of Epidauros Límera. Locals call this place "Kastraki", the small castle. In fact the history of this city is connected to the hitory of Monemvasia. When the city was finally abandonned in 5th and 6th century the people moved over to the rock of Monemvasia because it is so well protected against attacks. The ruins of Epidauros Límera have then been used as stone quary to build Monevasia. But you can still find walls and other traces and the city had a considerable size too. The small village on the bay nearby is called Palaio-Monemvasia probably because of the predecessing history of this ancient city.

When you have explored the site just enjoy a bath in the sea. There is a nice sandy beach right in front of the site.

You can get there by car easily. The road to Palaio-Monemvasia passes by directly and there is a sign that indicates the ancient site. The cache is at the akropolis, i.e. at the top of the city. Enjoy the magnificient view from there. The cache is a small plastic box with log book and small "treasures". Please hide it well again.

Small note on cache maintenance: Spyros P. has offered his assistance. Thanks!
