Geocache Description:

The site of this cache is the grade of the Crawford and Manistee River Railroad, near the Manistee River. The cache is on property owned by the State of Michigan. It is off King road and is a short walk from the CCC Bridge campground. The C&MR was built in 1885 to transport logs harvested east of Grass Lake (near Stratford) to the banks of the Manistee River. It was abandoned in 1904, when the timber harvest was complete. The grade can easily be seen as a trail blocked by a mound of dirt on the South side of King road. It proceeded up a draw and became what is now Sunset Trail south of where King road turns to the west. The line can be traced on USGS quadrangle maps, down Sunset Trail and then to the east. Its source was in Section 13 T25N R5W.

Information about timbering in the area can be found at the Crawford County Historical Museum in the old Michigan Central Railroad depot in downtown Grayling.
