Geocache Description:

Big Bar is rich with not only ranchland but with a very colourful history. Harry Marriott was born in England, but moved to Canada in the early 1900s. He first arrived in Toronto where he tried to go to school, but found that it was not for him. He moved to BC in 1912, where he started working for the Mighty Gang Ranch, north west of what would become Big Bar Guest Ranch. George S Harrison was a banker from Vancouver, and an old friend of Harry Marriott. When Marriott gained interest in purchasing a cattle ranch, he approached Harrison for finacial support. Together they started the OK Ranching Co. Ltd in October of 1933. As part of the deal with Marriott, Harrison sectioned off 100 acres of their parcel for his personal use. The beginning of Big Bar Guest Ranch. The Harrison House, known then as ‘the Big House’, was built for George Harrison in 1936 to house his family during holidays, as well as any guests who joined them from the coast. The house was built from logs straight off the property. Marriott sold the OK Ranch in the 1950’s. George Harrison sold his land shortly after to a family from Vancouver, the Squerrey’s. The family built our two older cabins to accommodate an even greater number of friends from the coast who came to visit the beautiful Cariboo. As the Squarrey children grew and married, the Cariboo lost some of it’s appeal for the lifestyle they wished to lead, and they moved back to the coast. The ranch was left then to a caretaker until Brian Gunn and his wife bought the ranch in 1989. Brian was an engineer and he and his wife, Kathleen, were looking for a slower pace of life for themselves and their two boys Danny and Dylan. Their dream was to own a guest ranch, so they quickly built the Sagebrush Inn, and eventually Brian added two more cabins and four tipi’s to accommodate the many guests that came looking for the cowboy experience, or just a weekend getaway from the coast. In 1997 Brian Gunn sold the ranch to Anne Freeman, who ran the ranch for ten years before selling it to Else Marie and Kresten Vestergaard. Else Marie and Kresten operated the ranch from Denmark for five years, helping to create new ideas and restoring charm to the old buildings. They eventuallly grew to realize that the ranch needed more attention than they could provide from so far and sold the property to newly weds Bryan and Amber Golat. Bryan and Amber bring many years of guest ranching experience to the Big Bar Guest Ranch. They are excited to be actively involved in the operations of the ranch and look forward to experiencing all the Cariboo has to offer with their dogs, Butters, Blaze and Sadie.
