Cache is located at Peaks View Park. Although you can park in any of the lots, the lower lot at the Ivy Creek Lane entrance is the closest. Park is open from sunrise to sunset; obey all local laws. Cache is a bison container. Bring your own pen. Watch out for flying discs, but not the UFO kind.
This cache is in honor of our first anniversary as geocachers. We also chose an astronomer to tie in with an upcoming “planet” series that will be placed around Lynchburg.
Johann Galle (June 9, 1812-July 10, 1910), a German astronomer, was the first person to view Neptune and know that he was looking at a planet. Galle used the calculations of Urbain Le Verrier, who had been studying the perturbations of the orbit of Uranus looking for undiscovered planet, and found Neptune 1 degree from where it was predicted. Galle always refused to be acknowledged as the discoverer of Neptune; he attributed the discovery to Le Verrier.
Before his discovery of Neptune, Galle observed an inner, dark ring of Saturn and three new comets. Two craters (one on Mars and one on the Moon), the asteroid 2097 Galle, and a ring of Neptune have all been named in his honor.
