L’antefatto

Il mattino del 7 febbraio 1945, sei giovani aviatori americani salirono sul loro aereo da combattimento, un B-25J Mitchell stazionato in Corsica dal nomignolo di “The Big Swing”. Missione, distruggere un importante e ben difeso obiettivo nel Nord Italia: il ponte ferroviario di Lavis. Dopo un attacco della contraerea, l’equipaggio di un altro velivolo costatò una grossa breccia in un’ala del “Big Swing”. L’apparecchio perse velocemente quota e l’equipaggio si mise in salvo col paracadute. L’aereo senza pilota precipitò ad Arbedo, presso Bellinzona. (fonte: www.warbird.ch, tradotto)

Il copilota, secondo tenente Billy Sanders, da Angleton TX, 21 anni, si lanciò per terzo. Atterrò a Monte Carasso, ma noi lo ricordiamo qui, non lontano dal laghetto di Orbello*, raggiungibile a piedi su sentiero (500m di dislivello, inizio presso Cache "Joseph Brentar" GC4DA4X, WP1) o (quasi) in bici sulla strada da Arbedo (WP2). Segnatevi Il suo numero fortunato E per ritrovare il Big Swing al termine di questa serie dove prima dovrete ricuperare tutti e sei gli aviatori sui luoghi dei loro atterraggi. Se state svolgendo la serie, questa è idealmente la penultima da prendere, prima di ricuperare il pilota Sheffield e puntare infine sul Mitchell.

Ringraziamo Manuela e Christian Gloor per aver investigato, ricostruito e descritto quest’appassionante vicenda nel loro estroso libro The Big Swing. * Il Laghetto d'Orbello, altra storia interessante: Il pomeriggio del 2 ottobre 1928, il dirupo del Sasso Marcio (un nome, una garanzia!) franò rovinosamente portandosi via la strada che collegava i Monti di Tagliada con i Monti di Cò, ostruendo la valle d'Arbedo e formando così il laghetto d’Orbello. La frana è tutt’oggi ancora in movimento (geologicamente parlando). G. Gemnetti, membro del Comitato della Società ticinese di scienze naturali così illustra l'avvenimento: "E il due ottobre, alle 8,45 di mattina, il dirupo di Sasso Marcio si accasciava, in parte, su se stesso e nel pomeriggio, alle 3 e 25, con immenso fragore, udito a parecchi chilometri di distanza, tutto il versante fra val Taglio e val Pium si sfasciava e precipitava a valle in una immane lavina di blocchi, di alberi, di cascine, avvolti in una densa nube di polvere." Background

In the morning of February 7th, 1945 six young American flyers mounted its combat aircraft, one in Corsica stationed B-25J Mitchell with the nickname “The Big Swing”. Mission, the destruction of an important and strongly defended objective in northern Italy: the bridge of Lavis. After an attack of the “Flak”, the crew of another airplane determined a large hole in the wing of the Big Swing. The bomber lost rapidly height and the crew left its Mitchell with the parachute. 2nd Lieutenant William A. Sanders

The co-pilot, 2nd lieutenant Billy Sanders, from Angleton TX, 21 years old, jumped as third. He landed in Monte Carasso, but we remember him there, not far from the Laghetto d'Orbello. You can hike there on a trail of 500m difference in height, starting at the Cache "Joseph Brentar" GC4DA4X, WP1, or (almost) by bike on paved road starting at WP2. Remember his lucky number E (written in the logbook) to find the Big Swing at the end of this Series, where you have to rescue all six flyers at their landing places. If you are questing for the whole Series, this is ideally the fifth out of six to search. Then you go for the pilot Sheffield and finally for the Mitchell (Cache Bonus).

Hintergrund

Am Morgen des 7. Februar 1945 bestiegen sechs junge amerikanische Flieger ihr Kampfflugzeug, eine auf Korsika stationierte B-25J Mitchell mit dem Spitznamen "The Big Swing". Der Einsatzbefehl lautete: Zerstörung eines wichtigen und stark verteidigten Zieles in Norditalien, die Brücke von Lavis. Nach einem Angriff der Flak, stellte die Crew einer anderen Maschine ein grosses Loch im Flügel der "Big Swing" fest. Die Maschine verlor rasch an Höhe und die Crew verliess ihre Mitchell mit dem Fallschirm. Die führerlose Maschine stürzte in Arbedo bei Bellinzona ab. (Quelle: www.warbird.ch)

Der Co-pilot 2nd Lieutenant Billy Sanders, aus Angleton TX, 21 Jahre alt, war der Dritte zu springen. Er landete bei Monte Carasso aber wir wollen ihn erinnern hier, nicht far vom Laghetto d'Orbello. Dieser See kann mit Bergwanderung auf Weg von 500m Höhendifferenz erreicht werden. Weganfang beim "Joseph Brentar" Cache GC4DA4X, WP1. Mit Velo kann man die sonst geschlossene Strasse ab WP2 befahren bis (fast) zur Cache. Merke sein Glücksnummer E (im Logbook geschrieben) um dem Big Swing am Ende dieser Serie zu finden, wo du alle sechs Flieger am respektive Landungsorte retten musst. Falls du an der Suche der ganzen Serie bist, diese ist Idealerweise die vorletzte Cache. Danach suche der Pilot, Sheffield, und schlussendlich den Mitchell (Bonus cache).
