"Blaine's Crossroads" and The "Last Widow of a Union Civil War Soldier"
Blaine is a small town with friendly people and some history to share. Here you will find some history of the Civil War, the men, and what they endured on a plaque. The plaque was set in place on 6/3/2013 for all to enjoy a little taste of history. I want to thank the people who take time and put forth a effort to preserve it. At times you may find people playing ball, playing on the playground or enjoying a meal on the picnic table's close by. Across the road from here is a cabin where the Last Widow of a Union Soldier once lived, Gertrude Grubb Janeway. Gertrude Grubb was born in Blaine, Tennessee, and was courted by John Janeway beginning when she was only 16. Her mother, widowed when Gertrude was only 13, would not allow her to marry until she was 18. She married John Janeway, an officer in the 14th Illinois cavalry, in 1927 when she was 18 and he 81. The marriage ceremony took place in the middle of a dirt road with family and friends in attendance. They lived together in a log cabin in Blaine, Tennessee until John Janeway's death in 1937. She was a member of the Green Acres Missionary Baptist Church. Gertrude continued to live in the cabin for nearly 70 years after her husband's death. She received a $70 pension check for veterans' benefits from the government every two months until her death in 2003. [ This a two stage multi cache. First stage at city hall parking lot and the second stage across the road at the cabin. There you will find a log book and some swag..... Hope you enjoy..
