A little of History
Martroi-aux-Corps, or the Grand Cimetière, or even Campo Santo after 1912, was, for many years, the main cemetery in Orléans. Created in the 12th century,  enclosed by arcades in the 15th and 16th centuries, for 600 years it served as the final resting place for the residents of Orléans and, in the 16th century, more specifically for the inhabitants of the sixteen parishes and two suburbs. During the Wars of Religion, it was desecrated, and the tombstones were smashed and defaced and the adjoining chapels were burnt down. In the 18th century, owing to the excessively high number of burials, it was decided that the site was unhealthy and it was closed. A new cemetery was built to the north of the town and on the now vacant site of the former cemetery, the halle aux grains (cereal market) was built, with various other buildings built below the arcades.
