L’antefatto

Il mattino del 7 febbraio 1945, sei giovani aviatori americani salirono sul loro aereo da combattimento, un B-25J Mitchell stazionato in Corsica dal nomignolo di “The Big Swing”. Missione, distruggere un importante e ben difeso obiettivo nel Nord Italia: il ponte ferroviario di Lavis. Dopo un attacco della contraerea, l’equipaggio di un altro velivolo costatò una grossa breccia in un’ala del “Big Swing”. L’apparecchio perse velocemente quota e l’equipaggio si mise in salvo col paracadute. L’aereo senza pilota precipitò ad Arbedo, presso Bellinzona. (fonte: www.warbird.ch, tradotto)

Il pilota, secondo tenente Woody Sheffield, da Houston TX, 25 anni, fu il quarto a lanciarsi, e atterrò nei pressi di Castelgrande, a Bellinzona. Nell’impossibilità di piazzare una cache laggiù, la posiamo quassù, ai Monti di Cò, raggiungibili a piedi su sentiero (800m di dislivello, JB) o in bici sulla strada (1100m di salita + 400m al ritorno, BK) da Arbedo. Segnatevi il suo numero fortunato F per ritrovare il Big Swing al termine di questa serie dove prima dovrete ricuperare tutti e sei gli aviatori sui luoghi dei loro atterraggi. Se state svolgendo la serie, questa è la cache più vicina al finale, idealmente l’ultima da prendere prima di calcolare e raggiungere le coordinate del luogo dello schianto del B-25.

Background

In the morning of February 7th, 1945 six young American flyers mounted its combat aircraft, one in Corsica stationed B-25J Mitchell with the nickname “The Big Swing”. Mission, the destruction of an important and strongly defended objective in northern Italy: the bridge of Lavis. After an attack of the “Flak”, the crew of another airplane determined a large hole in the wing of the Big Swing. The bomber lost rapidly height and the crew left its Mitchell with the parachute. The pilot, 2nd Lieutenant Woody Sheffield, from Houston TX, 25 years old, jumped as fourth and landed at Castelgrande in Bellinzona. As it is not possible to hide a cache there, we hide it here, at Monti di Cò, that you can reach by feet (hike on trail with 800m difference in height, starting from JB) or by bicycle (1100m difference in height forth and 400m back, starting from BK) from Arbedo. Remember his lucky number F (written in the logbook) to find the Big Swing at the end of this Series, where you have to rescue all six flyers at their landing places. If you are questing for the whole Series, this is the nearest cache to the Bonus cache, so take it ideally as last, then go for the Final destination.

Am Morgen des 7. Februar 1945 bestiegen sechs junge amerikanische Flieger ihr Kampfflugzeug, eine auf Korsika stationierte B-25J Mitchell mit dem Spitznamen "The Big Swing". Der Einsatzbefehl lautete: Zerstörung eines wichtigen und stark verteidigten Zieles in Norditalien, die Brücke von Lavis. Nach einem Angriff der Flak, stellte die Crew einer anderen Maschine ein grosses Loch im Flügel der "Big Swing" fest. Die Maschine verlor rasch an Höhe und die Crew verliess ihre Mitchell mit dem Fallschirm. Die führerlose Maschine stürzte in Arbedo bei Bellinzona ab. (Quelle: www.warbird.ch)

Der Pilot, 2nd Lieutenant Woody Sheffield, aus Houston, TX, 25 Jahre alt, ist als vierter gesprungen und landete bei Castelgrande in Bellinzona. Da wir nicht eine Cache dorthin verstecken können, tun wir es hier, bei der Monti di Cò. Man kann sie entweder zu Fuss (800m Höhendifferenz auf Weg, JB) oder mit dem Velo (1100m Höhendifferenz + 400m Retour, BK) von Arbedo erreichen. Merke sein Glücksnummer F (im Logbook geschrieben) um dem Big Swing am Ende dieser Serie zu finden, wo du alle sechs Flieger am respektive Landungsorte retten musst. Falls du an der Suche der ganzen Serie bist, diese ist die näheste Cache zum Bonus, so idealerweise geht nachdem direkt zum Gran Finale.
