This is the third in a series of geocaches exploring historic Ligoniel- the last of Belfast's mill villages. This one is situated at Ligoniel Park, a location for BBC's "The Fall".
The historic village of Ligoniel was primarily associated with the bleaching and spinning of flax. It is thought the bleaching of linen initially began in the village in 1770. Ligoniel is situated on Wolf Hill, which so named it is said because this is where the last wolf in Ireland was killed. At one time there were no less than six mills operating in the Ligoniel area alone so it is no wonder that Belfast became known as Linenopolis.
Ligoniel Park was formed from the grounds of Ligoniel House, which was owned by the manager of the old Ligoniel mill. The park’s pond was once a mill dam, known locally as Boodles’ Dam. Today, the park contains mature trees, impressive views over north Belfast and interesting wildflowers which grow on the area’s limestone.
This location was also used during the filming of the second series of BBC's "The Fall" starring Gillian Anderson and Jaimie Dornan. Indeed, the cache is located just a few metres from where a young woman's body was found in the drama. Proceed if you dare! ;)
The Cache-
This cache is located in an area that affords wonderful views over Belfast city, with Scrabo tower and the Mournes visible on most days, so do enjoy the view! The cache is a camo containing a log sheet and a pencil. Please be careful when removing and replacing this cache, ensuring it is returned to its exact location. I recommend trousers as there can be some nettles around. I have never been stung there though! Due to tree covering, coordinates may be a few feet out, but geosense and clue will get you there! Spoiler images may help as this can get quite overgrown in the summer. There are usually muggles in the park, although rarely in this location, so just keep a wee eye out.
To complete the full "Ligoniel stroll" series, certain information is required from the location of each cache. If you would like to know what information you will require from this cache site, please scroll down.
What number is written at the top of the log sheet?
How many benches can you see from the cache site?
