Welcome to Mangrove Bay Park!

You may want to check the tides before going to find this one! At high tide you may have to get your feet wet.

This beautiful bay beach adjacent to Somerset Village is a great place to go swimming, snorkeling and have a picnic.

Just off the beach is an extensive seagrass bed. Seagrass communities are important habitats, serving as both nursery and grazing area for other marine inhabitants. Seagrasses enhance Bermuda's water quality and clarity by trapping marine sediments suspended within the water column and stabilizing benthic sediment, minimizing the effect of erosion. Seagrasses and the communities they foster are important both economically and ecologically.

A substantial loss of Bermuda's seagrass population between 1997 and 2004 prompted the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to implement a benthic mapping, monitoring and assessment program (BBMAP). The program provides regular, quarterly health-checks of seagrass habitat at 17 sites. The sites include some that are likely to be impacted by recreational boating and cruise ships, sewage, and surface runoff from farms or golf courses (especially fertilizers). Through these regular surveys, managers can detect and respond to changes and identify factors causing changes quickly and effectively.

Some plants and animals found in Bermuda's seagrass beds include Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas), Seahorses (Hippocampus spp.), Queen Conch (Strombus gigas), Harbour Conch (Strombus costatus) and Spotted Eagle Rays (Aetobatus narinari).
