The church of St James The Greater , Eastbury was erected between 1851 and 1853 by George Edmund Street. Street designed and built many churches during his career, including the churches at Brightwalton and Fawley, but he is perhaps best known as the designer of the Royal Courts of Justice, in the Strand in London .

The church is a simple design consisting of a nave, chancel and north aisle. Above the junction of the nave and chancel sits a double bell-cote. The building is said to have been influenced by the medieval barns of north and west Berkshire. The walls are faced with knapped flints with stone dressings under a red tile roof.
Prior to the construction of the church, services in Eastbury were conducted in the open air at the 15th century preaching cross, which can be found on the opposite side of the River Lambourn to the church.

Parking can be found close to the church at N51 29.574 W001 30.150 or failing that at N51 29.482 W001 29.957.
The published coordinates take you to the 15th century preaching cross. On the cross there is a small plaque. The year on the plaque is ABCD.
Now make your way over the river to the church. Find the war memorial at N51 29.565 W001 30.153. Count how many Men of Eastbury were killed in the two wars. This gives you EF.
Now make you way round to the left of the church and follow the path up to the church yard where you will find a seat at N51 29.538 W001 30.168. What year was Jinny born? Call it GHJK.
