Venables Valley was named after Captain Cavendish Venables, formerly of the 74th Highlanders, who secured a military land grant in the area around 1861. His estate was derisively called “Mount Freeze Out” since its altitude exposed it to frequent frosts. The Valley has seen many uses over the years. It has been the site of homesteads, saw mills, tree farms, Epsom salt mines, and other uses. In 1982, members of the Hare Krishna Vaishnava community in Vancouver purchased 1700 acres in the Venables Valley and formed the Venables Valley Co-operative (Saranagati). The road is well maintained but can be slippery when wet. Watch for oncoming traffic, livestock and wildlife.
