35 mm film canister with log only.
After following the general course of Hwy 24 from near what is now Aladdin, the column of wagons and troops of George A. Custer's expedition to the Black Hills turned more westerly to avoid some rough ravines. Behind this ranch house and corrals to the south is the semi flat area where the whole troop stopped for the night of July 21, 1874. There they found a spring and plenty of grass to water the troops, about one thousand horses, and 650 mules. Unfortunately it is also the site of the death of Private John Cunningham, succumbing to his injuries a little before midnight. He and one other soldier from the expedition were buried the next day south of Sundance along what is now Hwy 585.
In 1874 the expedition journals talk about large boulders strewn across the prairie near the camp. You'll see some of these rocks stacked along the road on the way to the cache. Please be respectful of the ranch and don't park to block the entrance gate.
