Geocache Description:

This is a simple offset multi, so the cache is not at the published co-ords; they are for suitable roadside parking for a couple of cars.

The Field Maple (Acer campestre), one of our most attractive small indigenous trees, is a deciduous, broadleaved tree native to Great Britain and much of Northern Europe. It is said to be the only maple whose leaves do not turn orange or red in autumn.

Although it is often used as a hedging plant, it makes a shapely tree up to 14-15 meters tall with a similar spread. The leaves are born in opposite pairs, dark and shiny, with five blunt, rounded lobes. The bark is deeply fissured, and often has a corky appearance. The flowers are an inconspicuous yellow-green, in erect clusters, and the fruits are large, winged ‘keys’.

The sap, as with all maples, can be used to make maple syrup or wine.

Traditionally its wood was valued for its fine grain and was used for wood-turning, high quality carving and musical instruments (particularly harps). The wood is also used as a veneer as it takes a polish well. More recently field maple has become common in towns and cities as it is an attractive tree that withstands pollution well.

Now, on to the cache. Park up off the road, obviously without obstructing field gates. Nearby you will spot four handwritten digits on a yellow label on a post, in the format ABCB, and below them three printed digits in the format D00.

The cache can be found C (B-D) A feet, or (B-A) C (A/C) point (B-D) meters, from this post to the WNW (bearing of 292 degrees).
