Á hernámsárunum reistu Bretar Camp Grotta á Valhúsahæð, þar sem bæði voru braggar og skotvarnabyrgi. Einnig voru settar upp miklar loftvarnabyssur og fallbyssur til að verja innsiglinguna til Reykjavíkur og Hvalfjarðar. Einu ummerkin nú eru steyptar grunnplötur og stakar rústir skotvarnabyrgja.
Vesturhluti hæðarinnar var friðlýstur sem náttúruvætti árið 1997.


During the war British occupation built Camp Grotta Valhúsahæð, where they had both huts and shot defense. They also set up large air defense guns and cannons to defend the entrance to Reykjavik and Hvalfjarðareyri. The only signs left are the ruins.
The western hill was declared a natural monument in 1997.
