A nice easy 12km round trip walk from the Lough Derg car park. Mostly flat, but stretches through the forest can be muddy.
Bring a picnic, the cache is at the half way point with lovely views over Lough Derg most of the way.
The walk to the cache is based on the route of a pilgrimage path which has been in use since the 12th century. The route is fully sign-posted by little yellow bishops and extends through the Coillte forest. In addition to its historical interest, the walk also offers exception lakeside views of Lough Derg and the surrounding countryside. A number of spurs allow access to view points and sites of historical interest.
To get there, head into Pettigo and take the R233 for about 7.5 kms, following the signs for Lough Derg. This will take you to the ferry point for St.Patrick’s Purgatory where there is a car park and the start of the walk.
The related web site is a full description of the walk on the Donegal County Development Board web site. The cache is a small lunchbox. It started with a Donegal to Inver rail ticket and a couple of plastic toys in addition to the log book and pen.
