This cache has been archived.

Cuilcagh: As there's been no cache to find for a long time, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

This cache forms part of a series of caches placed along a recognised heritage trail which follows the course taken by the North Cork Militia and British Cavalry, ending up at Oulart Hill, where a decisive battle took place which lit the flame that culminated in a republic being declared in Wexford and a major uprising in Wexford, Wicklow and the East Coast of Ireland.

Marked on maps as Gaby's Cross Roads, this location marks the start of the only stretch of trackway on the original Dublin to Wexford road to remain almost entirely in the unpaved gravel track condition as it was at the time of the 1792 rebellion.

During the rebellion, it was said that a number of bodies were buried inside a nearby house (then houses had earthen floors) to prevent detection of the deaths. What's known for certain is that this location was where the last of the North Cork Militia were slaughtered having run all the way from their defeat on Outlart Hill.

The cache is a small round tub with room for small swaps and trackables.

Travel advice: Walkers, you will need to walk down this trackway to find the next 2 caches in the series and to find out some more of the region's history. The trackway is gravel along almost its entire length so sturdy shoes are recommended. Drivers: The decision for this next stretch is yours. The trackway is driveable - I've driven it several times. However, there are a few places in summer where vegetation encroaches right up to your vehicle both on the sides and underneath. One further consideration - in places passing places are very few and far between so you could easily end up reversing for a considerable distance. If you do drive around using paved roads, you'll miss out on 2 caches unless you decide to walk to and from your car.
