SA Garden Series # 2: The Little Church Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Knagur Green: Although this cache has 2 finds since being disabled, a previous cacher placed a 'throwdown' on the property. The CO obviously disabled this cache because there is a problem having it here on private property as per logs and CO comment. The CO did the right thing.

However as this cache has been disabled for 14 months ( Jan 2015) and the problem has not been addressed or sorted out and the cache reinstated. Therefore I am archiving the cache to prevent it showing on listings and other cachers using throwdowns to claim.

If the CO does manage to get permission from the property owner to place another cache within the next three months,( before 15 June 2017) please contact me and I will unarchive it for you.

Geocache Description:

A small just off the roadside 'Garden' Cache near Van Reenen’s Pass

Van Reenen’s Pass. The Gateway to the Midlands of South Africa. Some say God’s Own Country – or a touch of 'the Olde Country' - with its charmingly rustic views of rolling hills, lush forests, gentle rivers, tumbling waterfalls, mountain foothills and green farmlands - a perfect setting for a day of walking, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, or simply appreciating the great outdoors. No trip down the N3 is complete without a stop off at the Little Church – The Llandaff Oratory, in Van Reenen, just before heading off down the pass, where you can spend a moment in quiet contemplation. This is a jewel that is hopefully now won’t just be stumbled upon by accident. It is visited by thousands of people every year, no matter their faith. This Little Church has become a spiritual centre point for many people whilst on their travels. Weddings at the Little Church are also common, from a small intimate wedding or renewal of vows. Most likely the smallest fully consecrated Roman Catholic church in the world, the structure was built as a memorial by a father for his lost son Llandaff Matthews, who died rescuing 8 miners in a mining accident in 1925. The 8 seats within the church are representative of these miners. In 1960 Mr Charles West-Thomas bought it and had it declared a National Monument. In 1974, as a wedding present, he gave it to his wife Mrs Mims West-Thomas. In active use to a portion of the wider Van Reenen community, the church – the only privately owned Catholic one in the world - performs a commemorative function to the remaining Matthews family. Visitors to the church are astounded at its size, but also find a welcome tranquillity. Allow yourself a moment of meditation and reflection in a spiritual place that is a symbol of heroism and humanity. :) Well done WAZAT on the FTF!
