Cahir, County Tipperary.
The viaduct was built in 1852. It is the best example of a box girder bridge in Ireland.
There was formerly a rail siding on the town side from Cahir station which also spanned the viaduct, however this was cut short to a stop before the viaduct and was the site of an accident in 1955 when a beet train ploughed through the buffer stops into the river below. The driver and guard of the train were killed and a plaque to their memory can be found in the Cahir station building. This accident resulted in the closure of the line between Limerick Junction and Clonmel for three weeks.
On 7th October 2003, a cement train derailed approaching the viaduct from Limerick and crashed through the viaduct floor. The line was closed between Limerick Junction and Rosslare Strand for a year whilst the viaduct was repaired.
