To remember the Clarke family that perished in a flash flood that destroyed the Dorisvale homestead in late March of 1977.
There was a combination of high tides at the mouth of the Daly River and very, very heavy rain upstream of the homestead. The station Aboriginals went to the homestead that fateful day and warned the manager "that something bad was coming" and that they were walking out to the Daly River Mission. They did so, arriving safely. A flash flood occurred, wiping out the station and drowning the father and mother and their two children and the manager. Later, as a testament to the ferocity of the flood, shreds of bed sheets were found up in the trees, way above roof height. The alarm was raised by the staff at the Katherine School of the Air when the children - who never, ever missed an on-air lesson - failed to report in for two consecutive days. Only four bodies were ever recovered. Requiescant in Pace. There is parking on both sides of the road, but please, DO BE CAREFUL when crossing the road - cars and trucks pass by here at over 100 km/h!!!
