Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES!

But you will need to visit the I.P. to calculate the coordinates using the information given on this cache page.

Come visit the Cathedral Pines!  My ADK guidebook refers to this as "one of the shortest circuit trails in the Adirondacks and one of the most rewarding for its length."  It's only 210 yd long, and is an enjoyable short walk.

Along the trail is a plaque, which the above coordinates will take you to.  According to the same ADK guidebook:
"...a stone pillar holds a plaque commemorating a young U.S. Air Force officer, the son of a local district ranger, killed in action in World War II.  The plaque, dedicated by Governor Thomas Dewey in September 1946, was secured to a great white pine that snapped about 20 ft above the ground in 1989.  The pillar in front of that tree was erected in 1992."

I have provided the coordinates to the trailhead, in the "additional waypoints" section below. There is a small pull-off (for 1-2 cars) on either side of the road near the trailhead. Be careful, as there is a bit of a drop-off from the shoulder of the road. In the winter, this parking will probably not be available and you'll need to find an alternate spot to park.

Once at the trailhead, you can take the lower (left) trail to the IP, where you will find a the above-mentioned plaque. Here you must answer the following questions to calculate the coordinates to find the cache.

A. The number of letters in the word which describes the age of the tree when our country was born.
B. The number of letters in the first name of the person for whom the memorial is dedicated PLUS 1.
C. The number of letters in the last name of the person for whom the memorial is dedicated TIMES 2.
D. The number of the air force in which this soldier was a navigator in.
E. The number of letters in the place where this person was killed MINUS 3.
F. The number of the month PLUS the day of the month that this soldier was killed in action.

Cache can be found at N 43° 45.ABC W 074° 42.DEF

You can now continue on to the upper section of the trail to find the cache and see the trees for which the area is named.
