Geocache Description:

An easily accessible railway bridge over the Kaap river. The bridge is utelised by locals to cross the river. The railway is still used occassionally, so please be cautious. You do not need to cross the tracks to reach the cache..

This bridge consists of two inverted steel girders spanning 30m, one fish belly plate girder of 20m span, and one plate girder bridge of 10m span. The two plate girders were added to lengthen the span when the bridge was redesigned after the flooding and damage of February 1895. Pettegrew and Co were awarded the contract which started in 1893. Flooding in February 1895 led to severe damage of the bridge, then still under construction, straining the resources of the contractor and the syndicate was dissolved, the NZASM (Nederlandsche Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorweg-Maatschappij) taking over the contract. The bridge was redesigned and the superstructure raised and span increased by 30m in total, the abutments changed into two arched piers by the firm of Mowat and Still. The steel was manufactured by the Pletterij Den Haag of the Netherlands.
