Geocache Description:

A magnetic mint tin hidden on a revolutionary piece of machinery near Connors Mill in Toodyay

Connor’s Mill was constructed in 1870 for Daniel Connor, who had first arrived in Western Australia in 1853 as a convict. After receiving a conditional pardon in 1855 he worked as a hawker before buying land in Newcastle (now Toodyay) and building a store. He became extremely successful over the next few decades buying more town lots and expanding his business interests including having a steam mill built.

During the 1880s Charles Marris leased the mill before purchasing it in 1902 after Connor’s death. The machinery inside was modernised and a set of rollers were installed to process the wheat more efficiently. On display in front of Connor’s Mill today are some of the original grindstones that were replaced by the newer technology.

The next owner, Charles Lukin, built an electric lighting plant behind the mill and commenced supplying power to Toodyay in 1920. Flour milling ceased after 1921 when a major fire destroyed all the milling equipment inside the building. The building was then re-conditioned for use as a power station and in 1926 the Toodyay Road Board took over its management.

In 1955 Toodyay was connected to the State power grid and the building fell into disrepair until 1975 when it was restored as a museum and tourist office. Entry to Connor’s Mill is now through the new Toodyay Visitor Centre adjacent and visitors can view operating flour milling machinery first used in the old Northam Flour Mill.

Connor’s Mill is open to the public 7 days a week for a small entry fee.
