Geocache Description:

The Zemus slope is full of contribution of British Zemus, and there is his name.He visited Japan by the late Tokugawa period.

I entered a ministry in the Japanese Department of the Navy and gave technical guidance to Japan afterwards.

He lived under this slope.

This slope was called Asama slope in those days.

The Asama slope was a very rapid slope.

He made this slope the gentle slope by his money.

Robinia　trees is planted on both sides of the zemus slope.

A white flower blooms in early summer.

ゼームス坂は、幕末に来日し、その後日本の海軍省に入省し日本に技術指導したイギリス人のJ.M.ゼームスがこの坂下に住んでいて、当時は急な坂だった浅間坂を私財をなげうって緩やかな坂に改修したとして、ゼームス坂と呼ばれています。

J.M.ゼームス（1839～1908）

・幕末にジャーデン＝マディソン商会の長崎支社の社員として慶応2年（1865）に来日しました。

・明治5年（1872）に明治維新後は海軍の嘱託となり、軍艦などの船舶の構造について指導し、日本や中国の沿岸を巡航して艦船の航行について指導しました。

・日本人女性と結婚、仏教を信じ明治41年（1908）死去後、お墓は山梨県身延町の久遠寺にある。

ゼームス坂の両側にはハリエンジュが道の両側に植えられていて、初夏に黄色かかった白い房状の花が咲きます。

キャッシュは、ゼームス坂の上の方に設置しました。
