Geocache Description:

The Manzanar Family Cache is located just off Highway 395 near the old Manzanar internment camp.

The idea behind this cache is identical to my other cache, the Red Mountain Rest Stop, only this cache is slightly less easy to access and it is also one of the more qualitative caches you'll ever visit (see the list below for items initially stocked in the cache). The intention is that this cache is just as fun for adults as it is for kids, and that the reward for visiting it is qualitative items. I located the cache in this area as a way of breaking up long drives for families heading up and down the 395, and also because many families tend to stop and visit Manzanar on their way north or south. I'd like to emphasize that if you intend on visiting this cache please keep to this theme and bring items of the best quality that you're willing to place into the cache for what you take out of it.

This cache is located a short distance away from Highway 395 just down a dirt road on BLM land that leads away from the Manzanar cemetery area, and it is accessible to any high ground clearance vehicle or SUV, but small cars should be aware of limited ground clearance due to a few rocks and rough spots that can vary due to summer thunderstorm activity. However, if you drive slowly it's still accessible. If you navigate properly to the general area of the cache you'll find a small place to park along side the dirt road from which you can set out on foot to reach the cache. Small children can cover this ground with ease, but beware that although I've never encountered a rattlesnake in this area it is still rocky ground and caution should be exercised in warm months as with any desert area that may harbor rattlesnakes.

Again, your reward for taking the time to find this cache is that the items stocked in it are better than what you'll find in most other caches and it should be very fun for kids. The cache itself is in a large aluminum cookie tin and well covered with rocks. Once you find it, please re-cover the cache as best you can. Items most recently placed with the cache are:

Nature Sounds Player with earbuds
Travel alarm clock
Pocket calculator
Large dream catcher
Admiral Nelson brass telescope
Rubic's cube
Rubberband helicopter
Metallic expandable-type costume bracelets
Animal Snap game cards
Small BB-type puzzles
Tony the Tiger pedometer
Small flash light (AA battery powered)
Miniature Rubic's cube
Small kids flashlight (no batteries included)
Key chains
Yellow slinky and various small toys
