The area near the cache is known loacally as Morton's Wharf. The original owner was a timberman who owned large tracts of land an a sawmill on the Mersey River. Large oceangoing vessels could navigatethe Mersey river up to this point. Access was made possible by a drawbridge in Liverpool and a Swing Bridge on the Rail Trestle. Much lumber would be loaded on the ships at Mr. Morton's Wharf, but the ships could not be fully loaded as they would not clear the sand bar near the mouth of the harbour. Ships would sail down river and cross the bar at high tide, then would moor at Fort Point and finish loading their cargo.
Shiploads of lumber left mills on the Mersey River and travelled to all oints of the globe, returning with the necessities of a young community.
The area now is part of a Bed and Breakfast, and the owners allow local residents to continue to swim from the shore here. The local canow club also uses the area to hold races and classes.
