Geocache Description:

You are looking for a camo-covered diabetes test strip container in a tree with codominant leaders.

This is the fifth in a series of caches that I have placed for the students in my OSU Arboriculture (tree care) class to go out and see some of the tree care practices and conditions that we discuss in class.

This tree has codominant leaders.  Notice that there are two main branches that are about the same size.  As these two branches (or leaders) grow in diameter, bark gets compressed between them.  This creates a weak union that is subject to breaking in the wind.  Often, in a strong wind, one of the leaders will fail, and break, leaving the other standing.

Codominant leaders usually occur when the terminal bud is damaged early in the life of the tree, and the two buds immediately below the terminal begin to grow new branches.  Pruning one of the two developing branches and leaving the other as a single leader as soon as the problem is noticed (hopefully early in the life of the tree) will eliminate the codominant leaders and avoid bigger problems as the tree grows..

Congratulations to gururyan for FTF!
