Geocache Description:

Join us for our final CITO at Runkerry Beach, Portballintrae on Saturday 6th July 2013 at 10am. Bring a picnic for afterwards! Tea/coffee & buns will be provided.

Meet at 10am at the car park for the steam train close to the Giant's Causeway (follow the signs from Bushmills towards the Giant's Causeway). There is a £6 charge for this car park but the charge is for a full day parking - take in the ciant's Cuseway afterwards! (correct at time of publication). Free parking is available at the other end of the beach in Portballintrae but it is quite a walk along the beach for children. You could park in Bushmills & take the steam train to the Causeway Station (charge applies but good fun). This is our 4th and final clean-up in association with TIDY Northern Ireland as part of the Marine Litter Survey Programme. The early start should have us finished by the time the sun is at it's hottest and the beach fills up with tourists. The tide should also be out.

The clean-up is limited to the main beach; between the sea and the bottom of the sand dunes. Depending on recent sand movement you could be walking over large cobbles.

Litter pickers, gloves, rubbish bags & hi-vis jackets are provided (feel free to bring your own).

Tea, coffee & yummies will be provided at the end but feel free to bring a picnic. There are picnic tables in the car park.

Kids and dogs are welcome (both should be friendly!).

Feel free to come along even if you can't be there at the start - the clean up will probably finish about 12 noon.

Most importantly:    - DRESS FOR THE WEATHER - HAVE FUN - LOOK AFTER EACH OTHER - WEAR SUN CREAM -

TIDY NI is monitoring the level of beach litter at fourteen beaches in Northern Ireland one of which is Runkerry Strand. Beach litter surveys are carried out at set times, four times a year, to assess the type and amount of litter on each beach. The results are reported back to the OSPAR Commission.

The OSPAR Commission run a programme with fifteen countries within Europe to co-operate to protect the marine environment of the North East Atlantic. The data collected is vitally important as it will help provide an overview of the problem of marine litter not only in Northern Ireland but across the whole of North East Atlantic. The data will then be used to help to formulate solutions to address the problem of marine litter.

To meet the programme criteria, each beach needs to be cleared of rubbish following each survey to ensure that items are not counted twice and that is where our CITO comes in!
