A fairly straightforward cache in a very peaceful part of Cyprus.
We found Foinikas some seven years ago, on our first visit to Cyprus. The first time we found it, we were offroading through a lush valley and passed it above us on the side slopes. Each year since then, the water level has risen, and now the reservoir must be full to the brim. Some of the outer buildings of Foinikas are now half submerged, and home to the occasional fish.
The history of foinikas is a bit sad. It was a Turkish settlement, and the inhabitants were displaced in the Seventies. Since then it was populated briefly by displaced Greek Cypriots from the North, before the valley was dammed. It now lies very much in ruin, though there is the odd sign that (possibly a fisherman or goat herder) is repairing one or two of the higher buildings.
To get to the cache, I would advise approaching from Nata. The first time we found the place, we drove up from Paphos and took the first signpost to Foinikas. If you attempt that route now though, you will probably find your route goes underwater. Instead, use the waypoints provided. It is possible to drive all the way to Foinikas, but I would only recommend that if you are in a 4x4. Otherwise, I would stop once you hit the river, and walk the rest. Incidently, the river makes a nice picnic spot.
The cache itself is a small tupperware box containing a few less than impressive nicknacks. Its all we could find at short notice! We visit Cyprus every year so will be able to maintain it if anything untoward happens to it.
A notepad and pen is also provided, and there is a sheet of paper containing a password. If the F2F keeps that, and tells me the password, I will be able to verify their claim.
