Oh my, he's out. Everyone, he's OUT!! The cops are buzzing around...zooming here and there with sirens blazing...everyone..HE is out!!
'twas a gentle june afternoon that was well on it's way to handing off the reigns of the day to the night shift when we first heard them. sirens, running around the valley like they do, echoes bouncing and swirling through trees, houses and the occassional travelling vehicle...zooming by as if afraid stopping might permanently fix the tires in place and take the car on as a piece of the local landscape (though we cachers know better)...their screams wandering through the wind at first but gradually picking up momentum, taking on a shape, a space...here...there..no...just up the road towards the jail. They brought no comfort with them as the thought of police approaching should but instead carried with them the chilling knowledge of one single thought.

it's just up that road. ...and the sirens are leaving. no bueno translated my espanglish brain. this is definitely not good. we stayed over at the side of the road as they finished their approach, ripping through the corner as if they owned the road. as if it existed to carry them on it's roughened shoulders. just as quickly as they approached, the black and white banshees sped off, the sirens roar diminished by the change in direction. they seemed to tear a piece of us away with them as they fled, leaving us afraid of something...knowing that their hasty departure meant that the worst was upon us. someone had escaped.
we had no idea at the time what this meant for us or how this singular event would impact us but as we turned back to the car, pulled over in the dirt just off the road that something was just taken from us.
