Geocache Description:

Cheched cache on 8/28/03. Cache is in good shape and accessible.Left 3 Rochester History CDs.

Park in the fishing access lot.The cache is not far off a paved road but it is downhill in and uphill out. Be sure to go to the end of the road to see the Lower Falls.Check the log note from Hinge Thunder for altternative coordinates.

At the Lower Falls area of Rochester, NY the material at the top of the gorge was deposited about 410 million years ago and that at the bottom about 430 million years ago. You are looking at about 20 million years of geologic history in a gorge that was cut in the last 10,000 years. As you descend the road into the gorge the vegetation on the east side gives way to rock walls. The first obvious layer, almost at road level, is Seneca Park hematite. This is a red, one foot thick iron ore bed that was used in the blast furnaces at Charlotte and was also used for pigmenting paint.

This is a letterbox cache. Please sign the log and use the stamp but take and leave nothing. There are a few CDs containing articles pertaining to to local history. If you are interested take one. Please only one per group.
