Another urban cache near a place named after one of our locals...watch out for muggles and BYOP.
The most decorated soldier in the history of Otero County, New Mexico was killed in action, in the Korean War. He was Honored 3/6/2004 as Alamogordo dedicated their Community Center as "The Willie Estrada Memorial Civic Center". His brave actions in Korea earned him the Distinguished Service Cross, the Purple Heart, the Korean Distinguished Service Medal of Valor, the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and others. As a Tank Commander, Sgt. Estrada; with a second Commander and tank held off 2,000 Chinese attackers for 15 hours, with machine gun fire. As bazooka fire began to penitrate their tanks, Sgt Estrada signaled the other tank to flee, as he held off the enemy. Finally a bazooka shell made a hole in his tank and ripped his arm off. He still held the enemy off, who left him there to die. He was still alive the next morning, when rescue forces arrived, but died shortly later from the loss of blood. Grafitti, in blood was found on his tank. His enemies said, "Brave Fighter" as they left him to die. A street in Fort Knox, Kentucky is named after him. A Training Camp in Korea also bears his name.
