The building at the above co ordinates was opened in 1878 for use by Friendly Societies, which provided sickness and funeral benefits in the days before the welfare state. Its most striking feature are the animals’ heads, carved by a Mr Hadley of Grove Hill Road. The Gazette considered them ‘excellent carving’, but spoiled things rather by then saying that ‘to the educated eye of the initiated [they] seem somewhat out of character’. But why these animals? One theory is that they are taken from the arms of the Marquis of Camden the building after all is in Camden Road. But the Marquis was not represented at the opening dinner, and the Camden estate seems to have had no connection with the building.
