Geocache Description:

Meet 'n Greet in the parking area before putting in for a day or two of fun on the James River.

Saturday, July 13, 2013

Around 9:30 to 10:00 or so (Was 10:00 to 10:30 or so).

Kickoff a day of fun on or near the James River.

Pirate gear is optional, Landlubbers are welcome. Bring coffee, bring food, bring boats and stuff... let's meet, greet, and go!

We'll coordinate and uncoordinate water-borne or other departures. Whether you rent, pay for shuttling, self-shuttle, or daytrip, camp, or whatever, this is the place (or a place anyway) to hit the water!

We're hoping for levels above 2.5-3 feet or so at Buchanan, so do your best level dances! (visit link)

Feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or suggestions.

Note: This activity has hazards. You choose to participate or not on your own. The organizers are not responsible in any way for your participation or anything that may happen on the water or roads or anywhere.

While not an endorsement, nor an advertisement, but just an FYI... Twin River Outfitters (visit link) does have a good looking day-trip offering for rentals and shuttle from Eagle Rock (Craig Creek) to Horseshoe Bend. When we talked with them, they suggested getting reservations soon, and said cancelling within 2-3 days of your trip is an option (in case weather or water look bad).

Some want to day-trip; some want to camp along the way. Some may just want to watch the cachers hit the water... All are welcome.

Please RSVP (Will Attend) asap with your preferences or needs if you're trying to coordinate some arrangement. Arrangements are on your own, but if you decide to rent from TRO, please mention you're with the crazy geocaching group, so they can handle you appropriately. :-)

Craig Creek (Eagle Rock) to Horseshoe Bend

This 13 mile (5-6 hours) float has numerous Class I rapids and a few very easy Class II rapids along the way. The trip is the most remote of all the trips in the Upper James River Water Trail and was ranked in the June 2009 edition of Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine as one of the best Class I trips in the Southeast. A 10 mile portion of this trip has been designated a "Virginia Scenic River" section and also includes some of the most impressive remains of the James & Kanawha River Canal (All are located on private property so please view them from the river only). This trip makes a great full-day float, but be sure to bring food and water and remember to pack out what you pack in.
