This cache is situated in Masterton.
At this site, Joseph Masters, a founder of the Wairarapa Small farms Association, and commemorated in the name Masterton, met Retimana Te Korou at Ngaumutawa early in April 1853 to solicit his support for the sale of land in the upper Wairarapa Valley, after six years of unsuccessful negotiation by others.
In August, Sir George Grey and Don McLean, at Turanganui, near Lake Ferry, effected the first purchase of land in that area. This led to the acquisition of blocks in which Greytown and Masterton were first settled in 1854.
This noticeboard stands on the Kaikokirikiri Trust Reserve of 190 acres or thereabouts, given to the Church of England by members of the Maori Community of which Retimana Te Korou of Kaikokirikiri pa and Ngaumutawa village was the chief.
The cache is a small black ‘V’ container, containing a log-book.
Please bring your own pen.
