58. Den Grooten Oorlog : Slag rond Nieuwpoort :
Ramscappelle

In 2014 wordt het begin van WO I herdacht. Bij deze gelegenheid zullen wij een nieuwe reeks caches uitbrengen, dit langs de volledige frontlijn, van Nieuwpoort tot Mesen.
Ze worden onderverdeeld in verschillende 'veldslagen'. Elke veldslag bestaat uit 8 gebeurtenissen, met aan het eind een bonus. Iedere reeks bestaat uit korte multi's of tradi's.
Het is de bedoeling dat met een tussenperiode van 1 à 2 maanden een volgende veldslag 'uitgevochten' wordt.
Denk er aan : ook al ligt een gedenkteken of begraafplaats schijnbaar midden de velden, er steeds een zeer goed onderhouden pad naartoe loopt.
De caches liggen nergens verborgen op de begraafplaatsen.. De antwoorden op de vragen moeten wel regelmatig op de begraafplaatsen gezocht worden. Respecteer de stilte, aub. Maak je ook het napluizen van de aanwezige registers eigen. Je zal ze hier en daar nodig hebben.
Gelieve GEEN gebruik te maken van stickers in de logboekjes. Breng aub eigen schijfgerief mee en noteer vooral de aanwezige codes. Je zal ze nog nodig hebben !

Historiek
Langsheen de frontlijn worden al vlug kerktorens, molens en andere gebouwen, die een uitzicht bieden op de omgeving opgeëist en gebruikt als observatiepost.
De stations op de spoorlijn Nieuwpoort-Diksmuide liggen op de 1ste linie en komen voor deze taak uitstekend in aanmerking. Binnenin worden stevige, torenachtige constructies uit betonnen balken opgetrokken. Dikwijls wordt het gebouw stukgeschoten, maar de observatiepost blijft overeind.
Langsheen de spoorwegberm wordt de 1ste linie ingericht. In het station van Ramskapelle bouwt men een betonnen observatiepost. Van hieruit heeft men een uitstekend gezicht op de weidse watervlakte, waarin enkel de toppen van de hoeves zichtbaar zijn. De resten van de observatiepost zijn nu nog te zien in de tuin van het station. Enkele betonplaten, nu gebruikt als tuinpad, dragen bepaalde data. Hieruit blijkt dat men geregeld verstevigingswerken heeft laten uitvoeren.

Uw missie
Hier begint deze Multi die ons door het dorp voert langs enkele gedenktekens die herinneren aan de Grooten Oorlog en oktober 1914 toen dit dorp zeer zwaar beschadigd werd. Oorspronkelijk werd het door de Duitsers bezet, maar bij een tegenaanval door Belgische en Franse troepen werd het heroverd. We komen ook voorbij aan een Belgische militaire begraafplaats met 632 grafstenen, waarvan ongeveer 400 naamloze. Deze begraafplaats werd na de oorlog aangelegd.

2014 is the year we commemorate the start of World War I. At this occasion we publish a series of new caches, alongside the Belgian frontline, from Nieuwpoort to Mesen.
They are subdivided in different “battles”. Each battle consists of 8 events, with at the end a bonus. Each series consists of short multi’s or tradi’s.
Remember: although a memorial or cemetery may be located in the middle of the fields, a well maintained walking path leads always to the site.
The caches are never hidden at the cemeteries. The answers to the questions are mostly found at the cemeteries. Please keep your silence. Also accustom yourself to explore the registers.
Please DO NOT USE stickers in the logbooks. Bring along your own pen and note the present codes. You’ll need them.

History
Along the frontline, soon the church spires, the windmills and other buildings overlooking the area are claimed and used as observation posts.
The railway stations on the line Nieuwpoort-Diksmuide lie on the frontline and are considered excellent outlook posts. Inside the buildings strong, tower-like constructions are built with concrete beams. Often the buildings are ruined, but the observation posts remain intact. Along the railway track the front line is installed.
In the railway station of Ramskapelle a concrete outlook post is constructed. From here one has an excellent view of the vast expanse of water, where only the top of the farms were visible. The remains of the observatory tower can still be seen in the the garden of the railway station. Some concrete slabs, now used as a garden path, wear certain dates. This shows that regular reinforcement works had been carried out.
Your mission
Here begins our multi that takes us through the village. You pass some memorials that recall the Great War. In October 1914 this town was badly damaged. It was originally occupied by the Germans, but recaptured by Belgian and French troops. We pass a Belgian military cemetery with 632 tombstones from which 400 are nameless. This cemetery was built after the war.
