Geocache Description:

In 1847, Walter and Thomas Monteith arrived in Oregon and a year later, Albany became a reality. Since those days, a series of early homes have remained. Albany’s Hackleman and Monteith Districts boast many of these homes build in one of 13 historic architectural styles (See RELATED WEB PAGE).

Each year on the last Saturday in July, from 11am-5pm, the Albany Visitors Association hosts a historic interior homes tour. Several families open their homes to the public for tours. Each home has been lovingly restored, and reflects the best of both historic architecture and modern function. If there are those interested in this year’s tour, which includes refreshments, live entertainment and trolley & horse-drawn wagon rides, tickets will be available at the senior & group rate.

In tandem with this year’s tour, the AVA is sponsoring the 2013 Albany Historic Homes Coin Challenge. 300 unique trackable coins have been minted for this event. One coin will be given to each geocaching family that completes the Challenge Passport until the coins are gone. The kickoff for the challenge will run from 8am-10am in the Bethany Center at Albany Mennonite Church, 3405 Kizer Avenue NE, Albany, OR 97322. Passports and information will be handed out at that time. The cache locations will not be published until after 8am the day of the kickoff.

To claim your coin, you must find a total of 15 caches, 10 from the required list, including the multi and 5 others of your choice within 5 miles of the Albany area. If you choose to do 5 others that are not part of the Challenge list, they must be caches you have found on or after July 27, 2013 and within 30 days of completing the Challenge requirements.

To receive your 2013 Albany Historic Homes Coin Challenge geocoin, return the completed passport to the Albany Visitors Association at their office.
