This cache has been archived.

Blackpete: Cache is missing. Someone found it on 5/18 and described the exact location to me. We checked on it on 5/20 and it was gone. Nothing turned into the park office. There are now more caches in this park. Hopefully you will get a chance to enjoy them and the view of the falls from above. This was the first cache in this park and the first in the area. The ammo can had all 3 original books inside. If anyone locates this cache, please send us an e-mail and we will reinstate it. Thanks to all who have visited in the past 10 years.

Geocache Description:

Cache is located in Taughannock Falls State Park. This cache is approved by the State Park.

Taughannock falls is 215 feet high. When viewing the falls, look to the right side, high on the rock face. You should see an arch or "door". Since the Iroquois could not explain this phenomona, they created a legend about the door. Chief Ganungueguch's tribe lived along Taughannock Creek near the waterfall. Chief Taughannock and his Delawares raided the tribes in the area (Cayuga, Seneca) but were defeated and most of the Delawares who did survive were adopted by their captors. One of these braves fell in love with White Lily, a Cayuga maiden. One dark night the the brave and White Lily fled toward the Delaware's canoe on the shore of Cayuga Lake. Being chased by the Cayuga braves, the entire village was alerted and joined in the chase. Running through the pine forest the couple knew they would not make the crossing at the creek above the falls. Chosing death over the torture that would be inflicted on the brave per the Iroquois code, they stood on the edge of the falls, embraced, and leapt. Since it was dark, the villagers returned to the falls in the morning to gather the remains for burial. But when they returned, they could not find the brave and maiden. It was said that the Great Spirit was aware of the young couple's love and he opened the "door" high on the side of the ravine. When they jumped he ushered them through the secret passageway and closed the door tightly behind them.

Whatever you do, don't get near the edge anywhere in the park. The Great Spirit may not be watching out for you.

Cache is a 50 cal green ammo can. Don't miss the falls and the views along both the rim trail and the gorge trail.
