Taraxacum officinale - also know as the common dandelion – is native to Eurasia and can now be found throughout North and South America, southern Africa, New Zealand, Australia and India. “Lion’s Tooth” (from the French dent-de-lion) is well know for its yellow flowery heads that turn into silver tufted fruit that disperse in the wind.
Often considered weeds – these bright cheery yellow flowering plants are also widely used for food and medicine. The flowers can be used to make wine, jam or a honey substitute, the leaves are used for salads and soups and ground roasted root can be used as a non-caffeinated coffee substitute. Dandelion root is also sold commercially as an herbal diuretic and a mild laxative. The milky substance from the stem has been used as a mosquito repeellent and is a folk remedy for warts
This cache is dedicated to “Dandelion aka Dandy”– a Girl Guide leader within the Ottergrove District, Fraser Skies Area. Always there to help out (just turn around and you’ll see a dandelion there!) her sunny disposition keeps the us all smiling! Thank you for everything you do! In keeping with “Dandy’s” wonderful collection -the cache is filled with SWAPS for trade. Also know as “Hat Crafts” or “Traders” – these are small crafts that you attach to your camp hat (thus “hat craft”) that you trade with other girls you meet at camps or events. “SWAPS” - have many meanings, but some definitions you will find online are “Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere “ or “Share With A Pal” or “Something With a Pin”. I would love to see a picture of a SWAP you have made/recieved if you have one – we are always searching for new ideas! FTF gets the pick of the SWAPs!
Watch for muggles - there are many who walk their dogs and stroll through the park so please be discreet.
Congratulations to gearhedd on FTF!
