Geocache Description:

This church is dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch. It is, at present, a church without congregation and is being cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust, who take responsibility for its' condition and maintenance. You are looking for a camouflaged filmpot.

Please use care when retrieving and replace it carefully.

The church is a gem. A restoration of a church which dates, in part, back to Medieval times.

There are connections with the Neeld family of nearby Grittleton House. Indeed the church was rebuilt in 1845-46, by the architect, James Thomson, who designed Grittleton House. It has an unusual bell-cote, the original became part of the Victorian School in Sevington. Both the first and second Baronets are buried here.

The first thing you notice when you enter the church are the pews/stalls. They have high backs and are like ones found in much older church buildings. The second... probably the stunning stained glass windows, particularly the West window, designed by Wilmshurst. These are truly amazing. The small circular window above the extravagant reredos/altar is reminiscent of a similar window in St Peters Basilica in Rome. The interior layout of the church is attractive.
Wall memorials commemorate long dead members of the community, including the benefactors - the Neeld family, and there is a defaced sculpture of Jesus Christ which possibly links to the Reformation period.

St Margaret of Antioch is celebrated on July 20th in the Roman Catholic and Anglican Church. She is a renowned virgin and Christian martyr who was brought up by a pious woman who lived near to Antioch. She was disowned by her father when she embraced Christianity and consecrated her virginity to God. When Olybrius, a local Roman governor asked to marry her she refused to renounce Christianity. He tortured her. She was swallowed by Satan, who appeared as a dragon. The dragon choked on the small cross she wore and so she survived. She died in 304 AD. St Margaret of Antioch is one of the saints who spoke to St Joan of Arc. Patron saint of pregnant women, childbirth, kidney disease, peasants and exiles.

Congratulations to Bloodsock for First to Find.
