Geocache Description:

The Victorian school in Sevington is a short distance away from the village of Grittleton. The church of St Margaret of Antioch is a short distance away, in Leigh Delamere.

Sevington School was built by Joseph Neeld. He had inherited a vast fortune and he used it to buy Grittleton House and the land around it.

It was originally opened in 1849 and Miss Squire became the teacher seven years later, aged just fifteen. She taught there until 1913, for almost sixty years. The school room was built to hold twenty-five pupils, but by the time she retired there were only three pupils on roll. When the school closed, everything was left untouched. Today we can still see how the schoolroom looked in Miss Squire's time along with her desk, pointer and blackboard. On the wall there is a picture of Joseph Neeld, the original benefactor who built this remarkable school.

After the Political career of Joseph Neeld ended, he turned to developing his considerable estate. The church in Leigh Delamere had fallen into disrepair, was pronounced beyond saving and so, when rebuilt, the original church bell-cote, a window and the reredos were taken and recycled into the new school house at Sevington. So... what you're seeing on the rooftop is much older than the main building below it. There's a similar bell-cote on the church in West Littleton.

Quite a different experience of learning must have taken place within the walls of this school. The teacher, having begun at the age of 15 years old, never married as was the way in those days, and taught in the same school for almost 60 years! It just doesn't happen like this nowadays. There are links to the school online should you want to visit. Enjoy!
