Geocache Description:

Cache is located at posted coordinates.  However, you must complete a geocaching-related challenge before you may log a find: MOVE/DISCOVER/OWN a total of one dozen MnGCA travellers.

The Minnesota Geocaching Association (MnGCA) is the statewide association with the following Mission Statement: “The purpose of the MnGCA is to provide a resource for Minnesota geocachers to organize activities and events that will improve the credibility of the sport, protect our natural resources and strengthen the community of geocachers in the state of Minnesota. Our responsibilities include holding educational, social and informational activities to increase awareness of our sport; to sponsor reports, meetings, and workshops for MnGCA members and the public on a wide area of topics, primarily about responsible land use and geocaching; and to work with local, county, and state governments to promote geocaching as a family-oriented outdoor activity.”

In various years, the MnGCA has produced special geocoins for its members to purchase.  The first such coins were produced in 2006.  These coins were non-trackable, due to the expense at the time.  In 2007, the costs for tracking numbers dropped dramatically, and coins produced by the MnGCA since then have been trackable.

There have been 7 versions of trackable MnGCA coins and two MnGCA tags, as follows:

2007 Aurora Borealis MNGCA coin—Round coin. Reverse side shows the Northern lights surrounded by “GEOCACHING UNDER THE GLOW OF THE/ AURORA BOREALIS” while the obverse side has the MNGCA “Pine trees in MN” symbol, 2007, and tracking number surrounded by “Minnesota Geocaching Association www.MnGCA.org”  The icon for this coin is:

2009 coin available in multiple metals. Shaped like MN. Obverse says “MnGCA.org” and 2009 on a field of two pine trees. Reverse says “LAND OF 10,000 CACHES” and shows an ammo box and bootprints, all covered with snow. Tracking number is on reverse.  The icon for this coin is:

2010 coin available in multiple metals. Square shaped, with four canoe paddles as border. Obverse shows the MNGCA “Pine trees in MN” symbol and the words “Caching Minnesota Style” above and “Minnesota Geocaching Association” below. To the sides are four icons, representing and described by Winter (snowflake), Spring (red flower), Summer (sun) and Fall (maple leaf). On the blades of the paddles are (clockwise from upper left): Pine tree, 2010, camp fire, tracking number. The reverse shows a lakeshore scene with a loon on the water and a beached canoe. The color of the canoe varies with the metal of the coin. The blades of the paddles show animal tracks (clockwise from upper left): deer, bear, bird, wolf. The icon for this coin is:

2011 Coin. Rectangular-shaped, rounded corners. Obverse designed to look like a MN license plate. It reads “EXPLORE Geocaching/MnGCA/Land of 10,000 Caches” on three lines. The “Pine Trees in MN” symbol is between the Mn and the GCA. In the lower left and right corners are the tracking number and the year 2011, respectively. The reverse shows Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox by a geocache in the woods. This coin does not have a special icon.

2013 Coin. Rectangular-shaped, rounded corners. Obverse shows Split Rock Lighthouse with a beam of light highlighting the MnGCA symbol. It reads “Split Rock Lighthouse" in cursive font, above "Minnesota's Beacon". Above the Lake Superior water it says "Minnesota Geocaching Association" and shows the tracking number. The reverse shows a geocacher with a flashlight walking through the woods and states "Night Caching" "Minnesota Geocaching Association" on two lines. The coin is available in multiple metals. This coin does not have a special icon.

2014 Coin. Round coin. Obverse shows a loon carrying the MnGCA "Pine trees in MN" symbol on its back. It reads "Minnesotans are loony about caching", "MnGCA 2014", and "MnGCA.org". Reverse shows the rock crossing at the start of the Mississippi River, and an ammo cache hidden behind the carved information tree trunk. It reads "Itasca State Park" and "Headwaters of the Mississippi". The coin is available in a single finish, and does not have a special icon.

2015 Coin. Round coin. Obverse shows thePine Trees in MN symbol of the MNGCA and reads "Minnesota Geocaching Association" and "Celebrating 15 Years of Geocaching" and has the tracking number. The Reverse reads "GC9FF * Alvin's Phone Line * Minnesota's Oldest Geocache *" and shows a picture of that cache site, with "November 5th, 2000 Hidden by Ken Walker" carved into a log. The coin is available in a single finish.

2016 Coin. Round coin. Obverse shows the Aurora Borealis and the Big Dipper and Little Dipper over a pine forest. The reverse has the tracking number. The coin is available in a single finish.

2017 coin

2018 coin-A round coin. Obverse shows a compass rose on a black background. Within the compass rose are a "Sound it!" symbol on a yellow background, a bicycle on a green background, a canoe on a blue background and bootprints on an orange background. Around the compass rose it says "A HEALTHY ADDICTION" and "2018". The reverse side shows the Minnesota and pine trees symbol of the MnGCA on a brown background. It states "Minnesota Geocaching Association", "Track at Geocaching.com" and has the tracking number.

2019 coin--There are two versions of the 2019 coin, both shaped like the state of Minnesota, neither actually showing the year 2019. Both have light blue backgrounds on both faces. One is a general coin, the other is for members only. The General coin shows on the front the path of a geocacher wandering around the state encountering various cache type symbols on the journey. The Members-only coin shows on its front a design similar to the obverse of the 2011 coin, reminiscent of a license plate. The back of both coins is the same, showing "MnGCA", the MnGCA Minnesota and pine trees symbol, and the tracking number.

MNGCA tags—There are at least two varieties of tag. One is the “Pine trees in MN” symbol of the MNGCA, the other is an image of Babe the Blue Ox, and was produced at the same time as the 2011 Paul & Babe geocoin. The tracking number is on the back for both. The icon for these tags is:

There are also MnGCA pathtags in existence. These DO NOT count for the purposes of this challenge.

In order to qualify for this challenge, you must have moved, discovered, or own a total of 12 of these travellers.  Please indicate on your “Found It” log the number of each traveller you have, and whether they are “Move/Discover” or “Owned”.  As an example, my Found It log would include:

Moved/Discovered:
2X 2007 MnGCA Geocoins
3X MnGCA Cachekinz
4X MnGCA 2011 Geocoins
Own:
1X 2009 MnGCA Geocoin
2X 2010 MnGCA Geocoin

Notes:
  1. The nontrackable coins (including the wooden nickels from 2008) do not count for this challenge.  Only coins which can be verified through your “trackables” tab count.
  2. Trackable coins/tags which have not been activated do not count.  Again, only travellers which can be verified through your “Trackables” tab count.
  3. You may sign the log book before qualifying, but may not log a “Found It” until you indeed have 12 qualifying coins/tags.
  4. GeoCoinFest2010 coins and tags do not count.

There is an unactivated tag (non-MnGCA, sorry) in the cache for the FTF.
