Geocache Description:

The Washington County GeoTrail

WCG - Roundhouse Museum

The Washington County GeoTrail (WCG) launched on Saturday, September 14, 2013. The Trail consists of over thirty-five (35) geocaches placed at points of interest all over the County. Caches will be found in National, State, County and Town parks as well as at museums, wineries, historical sites and places of natural beauty. A trackable geocoin was awarded to the first 500 geocachers who completed the Washington County Geotrail. The original allotment of Coins has been exhausted and new parameters to receive the updated Coin are below.

To be eligible for the coin, GeoCachers may download the Washington County GeoTrail passport online at www.visitHAGERSTOWN.com or pick one up in person at the Visitor Welcome Center at 6 N. Potomac Street. Completed passports may be verified on site at the above address or by mail.

Please note the following Change. Washington County GeoCoins will be available for purchase at the Visitor Welcome Center for GeoCachers who log 20 or more caches on the Washington County GeoTrail. The cost of the GeoCoin will be $10. An additional $3.50 shipping charge will apply for passports redeemed by mail. For more information about geocaching in Washington County and the full complement of local amenities, the above links are your gateway to historically beautiful Washington County!

Participating in the WCG geotrail is fun and we hope that many people join in. However, it is not a requirement for logging your find on this cache once you find the container.

WCG – Roundhouse Museum

The Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum is located at 300 South Burhans Boulevard (US Route#11) in the heart of Hagerstown’s remaining rail yards. Its avowed purpose is to promote public understanding of railroad history and rail-road-related activities in the Hagerstown area. Museum activities include restorations, preservation, entertainment and education.

The 25-bay roundhouse and shop buildings were completed in 1939 and was in operation for more than 50 years, building, repairing and maintaining Western Maryland Railroad rolling stock. Despite the opposition of local preservationists, the roundhouse was razed in March of 1999.

The Roundhouse Museum offers rail treasures both indoors and out. Outside displays include locomotives and other rolling stock, a trolley car and numerous trackside signal devices. Indoors find an extensive display of model trains and railroad pictures and artifacts. For a good thumbnail look at the Museum before going, check out the clickable Museum link above. Future events of note at the Museum include the 2013/2014 Trains of Christmas Show and the 2014 Museum Railroad Heritage Days.

The Museum is open Friday through Sunday, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission fees apply.

This is a short two-stage field puzzle. The posted coordinates lead to a mural dedicated to the ‘iron horses ‘ of yesteryear. The establishment inside contains one of the largest operating ‘o-guage’ model railroad displays on the East Coast. Using the mural substitute numbers for Stage Two into the following:

N 39* 38. A B C, W 077* 44. D E F

A = The number of logs on the log car plus two.
B = The number painted on the side of the steam engine.
C = The number of words painted on the side of the coal car.
D = The number of human figures visible in the mural.
E = The Number of wheels visible on the steam engine.
F = The number of letters in the first word on the side of the coal car.

The final location is a short stroll (or drive) down the street to the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum. The cache is medium in size. There is ample parking. Please seek this cache only during daylight hours. Thank You.

The Washington County GeoTrail wishes to Thank the Hagerstown Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau for their timely and continuing assistance with this Washington County adventure.

The WCG also wishes to thank the following geocachers who spent countless hours in planning and deploying the caches – ALs Guide, Always Lost 00, Kitakima, LPYankeefan, nomaland, Snurt, tazscouter, and tiger77aam.
