The original allotment of Coins has been exhausted and new parameters to receive the updated Coin are below.

To be eligible for the coin, GeoCachers may download the Washington County GeoTrail passport online at www.visitHAGERSTOWN.com or pick one up in person at the Visitor Welcome Center at 6 N. Potomac Street. Completed passports may be verified on site at the above address or by mail.

Please note the following Change. Washington County GeoCoins will be available for purchase at the Visitor Welcome Center for GeoCachers who log 20 or more caches on the Washington County GeoTrail. The cost of the GeoCoin will be $10. An additional $3.50 shipping charge will apply for passports redeemed by mail. WCG – Washington Monument State Park

Located atop scenic South Mountain, Washington Monument State Park is named for the first completed monument dedicated to the memory of the country’s first president - George Washington. The Washington Monument is a rugged stone tower that was initially erected by the citizens of Boonsboro.

Picture the following historical account occurring today! According to a period newspaper, on July 4, 1827 at 7 a.m., most of Boonsboro’s 500 residents assembled at the center of town. Behind the flag and following a fife and drum corps, they trekked two miles up the mountain to a popular scenic overlook. Imagine that! 500 citizens hiking two miles uphill in July’s heat and humidity.

Working the entire day, they had prepared a site and began construction of the very first Washington Monument. At the end of day, and after a sumptuous meal, they entered upon a ceremony of dedication that included a reading of the entire Declaration of Independence and a three-rifle-round salute by three veterans of The War of Independence.

Workers returned that fall to finish the construction. Upon completion, the monument stood 30 feet high. Over the years, the monument fell into disrepair and was rebuilt several times. The most recent rehabilitation was the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1936. Today the Monument is maintained by the Maryland Park Service.

Most of the Park’s hiking trail is part of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The Park boasts first-rate picnicking facilities for families and groups, playgrounds and multi-purpose sports fields. Fall is peak time not only for color but for the watching of migratory birds.

The main office for South Mountain State Battlefield is located in the park. Stop by the park office or museum to learn about the first major Civil War battle fought in Maryland.

The cache you seek is two stage – initial and final.
The final will be found at N 39 29. A B C, W 077 37. D E C
