Geocache Description:

Located across from Cuba High School, this cache is near one of the entrances to the cemetery.  Please replace as found.

CUBA, meaning tank, was officially settled in 1879 by the McCoy and Atencio families from the Jemez area.  CUBA was first named Nacimiento as found on an old Spanish map dated 1776.  Nacimento is the mountain to the east.

In Navajo, CUBA means "gopher water".  This is said to have come from an elderly Navajo chief called Hastin Na'zisih who lived by a spring that had many gophers.

The name was changed to CUBA when the post office was established in 1887, and the town was incorporated in 1964.

These "Spirit" caches are a series placed at or near New Mexico cemeteries to pay respect to the pioneer ancestors who helped settle and form their communities.

We solicit your volunteer support as a cacher to place a "Spirit" cache at or near a cemetery of your choosing.
