Geocache Description:

The Purple Donkey Orchid or Diuris punctata is an endangered plant growing in sandy soils across eastern Victoria.  There are a few growing along the powerline easement, but the largest population grows alongside the airstrip a little further up this road in mown grass.  Its habit requires it to be able to see the sun.

Soon to occur is an extension to the runway so pools of water dont form alongside it.  This meant that this endangered Orchid are to be bulldozed.  After much argueing the Department of Environmment and Primary Industries where allowed to take volunteers including myself to transplant an insurance population incase none survived the earth works.  We transplated 600 in total to a not so secret location.

This purple Donkey Orchid usually grows with Themeda triandra (Kangaroo Grass) and is expected that this relationship produces the fungi that the orchid needs for its survival.
