Geocache Description:

Waimea Swinging bridge is not well known to the local population as the Hanapepe Swinging bridge but it has another attraction nearby which the road was named after.  This is my first cache and is a tiny pill container to represent the "little people" of this cache.

This cache is located in the town of Waimea on the Westside of Kauai.  To get to this cache you’ll need to venture into the valley by way of the Menehune Road.  Another route would be using the Alawai road a right turn just after the Waimea Bridge.  This road will eventually connect to the Menehune road.  This part of the valley is where I grew up and is known as “Smokey Valley”.  Don’t know how the name came about but everyone who lived here used to call it that.  You’ll know you’ve reached your destination when you see the “other” swinging bridge on your right.  Parking is a premium so you’ll need to find somewhere safe on the side of the road and walk to search for the cache.  The bridge was used to get to the other side where taro patches and farms were located when the river was high.  You could cross the river when it was low a few feet from the bridge downstream.  Don’t forget to visit the Menehune Ditch which is adjacent to the bridge while you are there.  Legend has it that this ditch was built by the “little people” (Menehune) at the request of the high chief of Waimea to divert water from the river to irrigate their taro patches.  The Menehune were very never seen by anyone so in order for the king to enlist aid from them he declared that no villager could leave their home at night so the Menehune  would be able to do their task without an audience.  There is a plaque that commemorates this event.   Remember this is a micro cache and I was only able to fit a log in it and it is best if you bring a pen with you. It's important that you please be sure to place the cache exactly where it was placed.
