"Halsa municipality", "Halsa" - the village and "Halsanaustan". It's all a bit confusing for many. In short: The municipality is called "Halsa". The name comes from the general area where this cache is. The more spesific area around the ferry quay, is called "Halsanaustan". Locals often say "Halsanaustan" for this entire village, so the municipality and the village isn't mixed up in conversation.
The cache is placed with the permission of the land owner.

NORWEGIAN:
Fergesambandet her startet med sommerrute i 1938.
Farmann I: 1938 - 1940, Raana (I) 1948 - 1951, Bilfergen 1948 - 1950, Frigg II 1951 - 1956, Gaute: 1959 - ca. 1959, Veøy: 1959 - 1961, Nordmøre: 1961, Jønshorn 1961 - 1968, Nordmøre 1968 - 1969, Gisle (II): 1969 - 1971, Averøy: 1972, Norvøy: 1973, Valldal: 1972 - 1974, Hareid: 1975 - 1977, Goma: 1978 - 1981, Glutra 1973 - 1978, Driva 1982 - 1993, Valldal 1992, Hareid 1992 - 1993, Driva 1993 - 1995, Valldal 1993 - 1995, Veøy 1993 - 1995, Stryn: Sommer 1994, Aukra 1995 - 2011, Hareid 1995 - 1998, Ørsta 1999 - 2001, Romsdal: ca. 2001 - ca. 2004, Aure 2002 - 2004, Geiranger 2004 - 2006, Stordal 2006 - 2011 og igjen senere, Nordmøre: 2008 (Sommer), Bjørnsund: 2009 - 2010, Romsdal: 02.2011 - 2013, Rauma: 2012 - 2012
ENGLISH:
This ferry crossing started in 1938. During the war years, the service was unstable, but it has now run steadily since 1947. This is a fairly busy ferry crossing, as it is on an "E road" (Europe road) and connects the main route from Trøndelag/Trondheim towards the Northwest country (Kristiansund, Molde, Ålesund).
The area around the cache is the centre for this part of Halsa municipality. This is one of three settlements in Halsa municipality that has shops: Halsanaustan, Liabø and Valsøybotten/Enge. From this area you can take a drive towards Innreiten or the other way around "Halsa-halvøya" ("Halsa peninsula"). If you have time, I recommend exploring the area around Halsanaustan somewhat.
This is the part of Halsa that is different from the Valsøyfjord side. The Halsanaustan area has older farms, historically run by owners of large farms- Halsanaustan would be a "richer" area than Valsøyfjorden. Some claim it still is.
It is also an area with an abundance of deer. If you drive along the E39 here at night in summer or between 9 and 12 PM in spring/summer, you may see tens or even hundreds of deer grazeing on the fields around this area.

Halsa
Halsa has it's pluses and minuses. Great nature. Beautiful scenery. Excellent hiking possibilities. Easy access to the main road along the Western coast (E39). Still, population is declining. Urbanization has hit Halsa harder than many other municipalities, even though people leaving for the cities is a problem in many rural areas in Norway.
Different areas of Halsa have very different identities. Valsøyfjord is an old industrial area and used to be the largest industrial centre in Møre & Romsdal county. Here, people from all over the world used to come to find work. The labour movement was very strong. Traditional boat building still stands strong here.
The other side of the Municipality (Halsa and Halsanaustan) was more proned to farming the land, land ownership and running timber industries. The labour movement was, therefore, not very strong here. One can still sense "remains" of that difference today.
Halsa is not spectacular at first glance (besides the scenery), but it is a very "honest" piece of rural Norway. And, as with most things, once you get to know the place, it actually is quite spectacular and has a very interesting history.
I therefore found making a kind of Halsa themed series was a fun cache project. There are/will be caches with short snippets of local history all over the municipality. At least one for each "grend" (village) and noticable site. If you are new to Norway, this example of a typical Norwegian municipality, everyday rural life and varied scenery, could make for an interesting experience and sightseeing.
Halsa has 1595 inhabitants and 300 sq. km. land mass, whereof 8 sq. km. is water. Halsa is also known for being the place where the world famous Killer whale "Keiko" swam to and stayed until he died some years ago.
The "Halsa" chapter in every cache decription will be identical.
