Geocache Description:

This makes for a nice pause on the walk between Trent Lock and Shardlow and you will get to gongoozle at the passing narrowboats as they head out to the river.

This cache is a 1 litre container camouflaged to blend in a little. It’s in quite a popular area so be cautious of general public and other gongoozlers. It’s possible to spot the cache and then be very discrete about extracting it. Please wedge it back as you found it so that it doesn’t wobble while in motion...

It can be accessed safely without going too near to the water, you will be adjacent to a lock though, so care should be taken at all times and small children supervised. There is plenty of parking at the nearby Sawley Marina between 06:00 and 18:00 daily. Be careful crossing the B6540 as the cars can come round the corner surprisingly quickly, it’s safer to go a little further towards the Trent bridge so that you have a better view of the road.

The floodlock mostly operates like a normal lock except that most of the year it is kept chained open and the Sawley Cut water level is controlled by the weir a little further upstream. During periods of elevated water levels the gates are closed but you will notice that two of the gates have red marked paddles and instructions to leave these open after transiting the lock. This is to provide sufficient water for the cut. The local lock keeper is responsible for adjusting the flow and controlling the water level in the marina and Sawley Cut and this cache is placed with his kind permission.
