Permission for the location of this cache was lovingly given by the First Christian Church family. Please be mindful and use stealth during traditional service hours and Christian holidays when the property is busiest. HISTORY: Construction of the church building began in 1949 with doors opening in 1950. The original five parcels of land were purchased from Atlanta business tycoon and former 44th Mayor of Atlanta, Asa Candler, who made his fortune as co-founder of Coca Cola. After the church building was complete, the additional lots across the street now known as the Toy Park were used for outdoor parties for church members and the neighborhood until a house was built within 100 feet of the area and city ordinances banned the grilling and gathering in the 1980's. In the 1990's, the church worked with local Quakers as they utilized the open lots until their school, The Friends School of Atlanta, was completed. In 1999, Elaine Alsobrook, a former 25 year preschool teacher, with the help of Herschel Maxey began a five year mission to rezone the church property and additional lots from residential to institutional-church with the goal of a green space and proper playground for the neighborhood's children. Glen Alsobrook, SR and David Chesnut raised $50K in three years for the 100 year flood plain and environmental studies, permits and equipment. The biggest hurdle for the completion of the playground was the little trickle of water known as Peavine Creek that runs near and also runs through two additional Georgia counties. With design plans donated by Caroline Chesnut Leslie, the 1.3 acre playground opened to the community in 2005. The Chalice Thrift Store is located in the church building facing Nelson Ferry. It opened in August 2012 and is run entirely by volunteers selling gently used items with all proceeds going to community outreach programs like Hagar's House, etc.
